In a previous publication, we pointed out the relationship between the lymphatic system and cerebrospinal fluid. This relationship was only scientifically proven a few years ago, but it has long been identified by osteopaths, including Marc van Leeuwen and Ton van der Heiden, as a necessary point of intervention for their approach.

On January 23, 2022, we as readers were once again reminded of the long-term symptoms that some patients continue to struggle with after being affected by the Coronavirus; particularly fatigue, but also headaches, muscle pain, shortness of breath, forgetfulness, and concentration problems. This time, a fine article appeared on NU.nl with a reference to an article in the journal Nature: sars-cov-2-infection-and-persistence-throughout-the-human-body-and-brain.

After seeing about 10 patients with these symptoms and a shared history, we would like to offer a suggestion regarding the main protagonist in these long-term Covid complaints: the choroid plexus in the various ventricles of the head, where cerebrospinal fluid is produced. We suspect that these plexi are burdened with the coronavirus, which entered the cerebrospinal fluid via the upper respiratory tract and through the ethmoid bone, a porous bone.

The question remains why some patients experience long-term symptoms while others do not after an infection. We do not claim to have all the answers, but we have formulated a hypothesis for this as well. What if these long-term Covid patients have something in common? For example, that they have all been previously burdened by a virus, such as the Epstein-Barr virus, the cause of glandular fever? It is possible that particles of this virus have anchored themselves in the cells of the choroid plexus and have been activated by the coronavirus.

We acknowledge that 10 patients is not a number on which one can base definitive conclusions, but this route has our full attention and, importantly, has already led to an acceptable and stable reduction in symptoms.
