Hardly a day goes by without a patient asking a question on behalf of a family member, friend, or acquaintance. Over the years, we have treated many different issues, but there is always more to learn. For us, too, the principle remains: we learn by doing.
Sometimes we receive questions about complaints or conditions where there is still little experience within the field of osteopathy. Nevertheless, we continue to approach the problem with an open mind. Therefore, the following also applies to these complaints: give us a chance. The body possesses a great capacity for recovery, and we often notice after just one treatment whether the body responds to our approach. Keeping patients waiting unnecessarily long without results does not fit our philosophy.
For instance, on December 22, I saw a patient with psoriasis. This is not a simple issue. But even now, the first question for me is: which structure plays the leading role and how did this problem possibly arise?
During my examination, the left part of the pelvis particularly caught my attention. It seemed as though a certain substance had once settled there, which the body had great difficulty processing. When the body cannot properly clear something, a reaction can sometimes occur in which the immune system becomes disrupted. This is also seen in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatism. Psoriasis and rheumatic complaints are therefore frequently related to one another.
I then asked the patient if she had ever heard whether she might have come into contact with certain biochemical substances in her early childhood, around the age of four. For example, through a small wound on the left foot, after which these substances could have influenced the left part of the pelvis via the lymphatic system.
The patient could not recall such an event, but she did mention that she had grown up on a farm and learned to walk as a child in the stable among the cows. Naturally, there were droppings and other substances there with which she frequently came into contact.
In addition, she mentioned that she had suffered from anemia since a young age. This is interesting because red blood cells are produced in, among other places, large flat bones such as the pelvis.
Coincidence? That, of course, remains the question.
As always, we will have to wait and see how the body responds to the treatment.
