Osteopathy for knee complaints

Knee complaints can have a major impact on your daily life. Taking a walk, climbing stairs, exercising, or even sitting for long periods can already cause pain or stiffness. Some people experience occasional knee discomfort, while others are limited daily by persistent knee pain, swelling, or a feeling of instability.

At Andromeda Centrum voor Osteopathie, we look beyond just the knee itself. Knee complaints do not always arise from a problem within the knee joint. The hip, ankle, back, or even old injuries can also influence how the knee is loaded. Therefore, our osteopaths carefully investigate what the cause of your complaint might be.

For more than 20 years, Marc van Leeuwen and Sten Bierens have been helping people with a wide range of physical complaints. From our locations in Veldhoven, Valkenswaard, and Bergeijk, we offer personal osteopathic care for adults, children, babies, and pregnant women.

What are knee complaints?

Knee complaints are all complaints that occur around the knee joint. These include knee pain, stiffness, swelling, movement restrictions, or a feeling of uncertainty while walking. The knee is a complex joint that must absorb significant forces daily during movement.

Because the knee is constantly under load, various structures can be involved in the development of complaints. For instance, the meniscus, kneecap, ligaments, muscles, tendons, or bursa can play a role. Conditions such as knee osteoarthritis, runner’s knee, jumper’s knee, or bursitis of the knee also occur regularly.

Common symptoms of knee complaints

People with knee complaints often experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Knee pain during movement
  • Pain on the inside or outside of the knee
  • Swelling around the joint
  • Stiffness when getting up
  • Difficulty climbing stairs
  • A locking sensation in the knee
  • Instability while walking
  • Pain after a twisting movement
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Discomfort during sports activities
  • Sensitivity around the kneecap
  • Pain after prolonged sitting
  • Limitations during daily activities

The severity of the complaint varies per situation. Some people experience only slight hindrance, while others find pain-free movement almost impossible.

How common are knee complaints?

Knee complaints are among the most common musculoskeletal complaints. Both young and old can be affected. Athletes, for example, are at higher risk for injuries such as a meniscus tear, runner’s knee, or jumper’s knee. With increasing age, we more frequently see knee osteoarthritis or wear and tear developing.

Additionally, knee complaints can arise after surgery, incorrect loading, or a previous blow to the knee. As a result, many people deal with knee pain at some point in their lives.

What causes hip complaints?

There is no single cause for knee complaints. Often, multiple factors play a role simultaneously. Therefore, it is important to look not only at the painful spot but at the entire body.

Physical causes

Various physical factors can contribute to knee complaints. Examples include:

  • Meniscus tear or injury
  • Wear of the cartilage
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Knee bursitis
  • Inflammation of tendons
  • Jumper’s knee
  • Jumper’s knee or springers knee
  • Damage to ligaments
  • Problems around the kneecap (patellofemoral pain syndrome or patellofemoral pain complaints)

Sometimes additional research is carried out by a doctor or GP. In certain cases, an X-ray can provide more information about the condition of the joint.

The cause is not always at the site of the complaint

Within osteopathy, we look at the interconnectedness of the body. Knee complaints are therefore not only examined locally.

A restriction in the ankle, for example, can influence the leg and the knee. Reduced mobility of the pelvis, hip, or lower back can also have consequences for the loading of the knee joint. Furthermore, influences from the nervous system, diaphragm, organs, and the spinal column affect the development of knee complaints. Therefore, we always examine the bigger picture.

How does an osteopath view knee complaints?

An osteopath looks at the cooperation between joints, muscles, connective tissue, nerves, and organs. When these structures do not work together optimally, the body can develop complaints.

With knee complaints, we therefore investigate not only where the pain is located, but also which factors may be maintaining the complaint. This broad approach often provides more insight into the cause of the complaints.

The goal of osteopathy is to improve the movement of various tissues, so that the body can function better and its natural self-healing capacity is supported.

What does the osteopath examine in case of knee complaints?

Extensive intake

During the first appointment, we discuss your complaints in detail. We will ask about, among other things:

  • The moment the complaints arose
  • The nature of the pain
  • Previous injuries
  • Surgeries
  • Sports activities
  • Workload
  • Impact on daily life

This information helps to get a complete picture of your situation.

Physical examination

The intake is followed by an extensive examination. This looks at the knee itself, but also at surrounding structures.

The osteopath assesses, among other things:

  • Mobility of the knee
  • Function of the kneecap
  • Movement of the hip and ankle
  • Muscle tension
  • Stability of the joint
  • Influence of posture and movement
  • Organs and surrounding connective tissue structures
  • (Central) nervous system

This creates a clear picture of the factors that may contribute to your complaint.

Investigation of underlying factors

Because knee complaints can have different causes, we also investigate possible underlying factors.

These include:

  • Residual complaints after surgery
  • Disrupted movement patterns
  • Old injuries
  • Reduced mobility of joints
  • Influence of stress
  • Compensatory behavior elsewhere in the body

Based on all findings, a treatment plan is drawn up that aligns with your personal situation.

Frequently asked questions about hip complaints and osteopathy

Osteopathy can provide support for a wide range of knee complaints. The treatment focuses on identifying the possible underlying cause. And osteopathy focuses on improving the mobility of the body to optimize the body’s self-healing capacity.

A meniscus tear always requires a proper diagnosis. The osteopath investigates which factors influence the loading of the knee and support the recovery process.   Even with a meniscus tear, the osteopath does not focus only on the knee. Instead, they see the knee as a part of the rest of the body.

With knee osteoarthritis as well, the osteopath focuses not only on the knee itself, but also on the surrounding structures that influence the movement and loading of the joint. These include blood and lymph vessels, the organs, and the surrounding connective tissue structures. Osteopathy cannot cure the osteoarthritis, but the treatment often helps support the reduction of pain complaints and/or stiffness.

No, not always. Sometimes a GP or doctor may advise additional research. In many cases, an extensive physical examination already provides a lot of information about the complaint.

When knee complaints limit your daily activities or when the complaints keep coming back, it can be useful to make an appointment for an examination.

In some cases, complaints decrease by adjusting the load and allowing sufficient recovery. When complaints persist, further investigation is often wise. Osteopathy focuses on identifying the cause and, in our experience, often offers a solution for runner’s knee.

Springersknie and jumpers knee are different names for the same complaint. This involves pain around the patellar tendon due to repeated loading when the knee’s load-bearing capacity is reduced.
