Osteopathy for Hip complaints

Hip complaints can have a major impact on your daily life. Walking, climbing stairs, exercising, or even getting up from a chair can suddenly require effort. Some people experience occasional hip pain, while others suffer daily from pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility of the hip.

At Andromeda Center for Osteopathy, we look beyond just the spot where the complaints are felt. Hip complaints can originate in the hip joint itself, but can also be related to the pelvis, lower back, knee, or other parts of the body such as the nervous system or organs. Therefore, our osteopaths carefully investigate which factors contribute to your situation.

For more than 20 years, Marc van Leeuwen and Sten Bierens have been helping people with various physical complaints. Personal attention, extensive examination, and a treatment that aligns with your body are central to our approach.

What are hip complaints?

Hip complaints are issues around the hip joint, the pelvis, or the surrounding connective tissue structures. The complaints can arise suddenly during a certain movement. Additionally, hip complaints can develop gradually due to overuse, wear and tear, or long-term strain on the body. However, complaints never arise without reason, and often a situation precedes them that reduces the local load-bearing capacity of the affected region.

The hip forms an important hinge point between the upper body and the leg. When the mobility of the hip joint decreases or when surrounding structures become irritated, pain and limitations can arise during daily activities.

Common symptoms of hip complaints

People with hip complaints often experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the hip and groin
  • Hip pain while walking
  • Stiffness when standing up
  • Difficulty moving
  • Pain in the leg
  • Radiating pain to the knee
  • Discomfort in the pelvis
  • Pain on one side of the body
  • Reduced mobility
  • Feeling of a blockage in the hip
  • Pain during sports or activities
  • Nighttime complaints
  • Irritation around the hip joint

Symptoms vary per person. Some people primarily experience stiffness, while others mainly notice pain or a reduced range of motion.

How common are hip complaints?

Hip complaints are common in both young and older people. Athletes regularly deal with overuse of muscles and tendons around the hip. In older adults, wear and tear of the hip joint and changes in mobility often play a role.

People with sedentary professions can also develop hip complaints. Prolonged sitting can influence posture, movement, and the load on the hip region.

What causes hip complaints?

Hip complaints often do not have a single clear cause. Multiple factors can simultaneously influence the onset and persistence of the complaints. Therefore, it is important to look further than just the location where the pain is present.

Physical causes

Various physical factors can contribute to hip complaints. Consider, for example, wear and tear of the hip joint, inflammation, hip bursitis, irritation of muscles or tendons, an injury, or a limitation in mobility.

Additionally, conditions of the pelvis, lower back, or knee can cause extra strain on the hip. This sometimes results in pain while the actual cause is located elsewhere. Our experience is that there is often an explanation for why complaints arise. For example, a significant fall in the past or emotional trauma can influence the development of complaints. In practice, we often see a relationship with the spine, the sacrum, and the diaphragm. But the central nervous system or the organs and their surrounding connective tissue can also influence the onset of complaints.

The cause is not always at the site of the complaint

Within osteopathy, we view the body as a single whole. A limitation in the lower back, the pelvis, the abdominal region, or even higher in the body can influence the function of the hip.

As a result, the cause of the complaint is rarely located at the spot where you experience the pain. By examining the entire body, a more complete picture of the situation emerges.

This knowledge begins with asking questions and addressing doubts, in order to then apply the acquired knowledge and experience to the next patient and share it with colleagues.

How does an osteopath view hip complaints?

An osteopath looks further than just the painful hip. During the examination, the connection between joints, muscles, connective tissue, nerves, and organs is assessed.

When different structures do not work well together, this can influence the movement and load-bearing capacity of the body. This can cause hip complaints to arise or persist longer.

Treatment focuses on improving the mobility of tissues and supporting the body’s natural self-healing ability. The cause of the complaint is central, not just the symptoms.

What does the osteopath examine for hip complaints?

Extensive intake

During the first appointment, the osteopath takes ample time for your story. We discuss, among other things, when the complaints started, which activities trigger complaints, and what your general health looks like.
Previous injuries, surgeries, and treatments are also addressed. This information helps to get a complete picture of your situation.

Physical examination

The intake is followed by an extensive physical examination. This includes looking at the hip, pelvis, lower back, knee, ankle, and foot. But also at the organs, blood vessels, and the nervous system.

The osteopath assesses mobility, muscle tension, posture, and movement patterns, among other things. This provides more insight into factors that may influence your complaints.

Investigation of underlying factors

Because hip complaints often have multiple causes, the osteopath also investigates possible underlying factors.

Consider loss of movement in other joints, scar tissue, tension in the connective tissue, stress, old injuries, or reduced cooperation between different body structures.

Based on all findings, a treatment plan is drawn up that aligns with your personal situation.

Frequently asked questions about hip complaints and osteopathy

Osteopathy can provide support for various hip complaints. The treatment focuses on restoring the body’s self-healing ability by optimizing mobility.

In the case of hip bursitis, the osteopath does not just look at the inflammation itself, as it is often the result of an underlying mechanism. The osteopath primarily focuses on identifying the cause of the bursitis.

Wear and tear involves changes in the joint that often develop gradually. Overuse usually occurs when muscles, tendons, or joints temporarily receive more load than they can handle. Often, the local load-bearing capacity is reduced, leading to overuse. The osteopath focuses on the cause of this.

In case of severe pain, sudden loss of function, a serious accident, or complaints that worsen rapidly, it is wise to contact your GP for additional assessment.

Rest can provide temporary relief. However, if the underlying cause remains, the complaints may return. Therefore, investigating the cause is often useful.

Paracetamol can provide temporary relief for pain complaints. However, it does not solve the cause of the complaints. For advice regarding medication, we recommend contacting your GP.
