Osteopathy for adults

Many adults live with complaints such as headaches, fatigue, dizziness, shoulder, neck, or back pain, or migraines for extended periods. Sometimes complaints arise suddenly, but more often they develop gradually. It is often thought that poor posture, work-related strain, or stress are the cause of these issues. However, there is often a preceding factor that reduces the body’s physical tolerance or triggers the symptoms.

Osteopathy for adults focuses on investigating the cause behind these complaints. An osteopath does not only look at the area where pain or symptoms are present, but at the body as a whole. The osteopath at Andromeda focuses on the primary dysfunction—the structure with a loss of mobility responsible for the onset and persistence of complaints.

At Andromeda Center for Osteopathy, personal attention, thorough examination, and a calm approach are central. Every treatment is tailored to your personal situation, health, and the physical tolerance of the patient.

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy in which the body is examined and treated using the hands. Within osteopathy, mobility is central, as all structures in the body must be able to move well to function optimally. This applies to joints, muscles, connective tissue, organs, blood vessels, and nerves, among others. When the mobility of these tissues decreases, it can affect health and lead to complaints. An osteopath therefore examines where movement restrictions are present and how different systems in the body influence each other. From an osteopathic perspective, the body is always viewed as a single whole, where everything is interconnected.

How do complaints develop in adults?

The body has a strong capacity for adaptation and is usually able to heal itself. However, this self-healing ability can sometimes be disrupted, meaning tension, strain, or other influences can no longer be properly compensated for. This might include severe emotional stress (fear, extreme grief, or a sense of injustice), or mechanical trauma resulting from a fall or blow. Biochemical (virus, bacteria, or fungus) or chemical stressors can also have an impact. Complaints do not always arise at the site of the cause. For example, a headache may be related to tension in the neck, the diaphragm, or the connective tissue around the skull, while back pain can be influenced by the mobility of organs, the pelvis, or previous injuries. Factors such as persistent stress, fatigue, surgery, pregnancy, scar tissue, or long-term strain can also affect the interaction between various structures in the body. Within osteopathy, this connection is examined to determine where the body needs support to activate its self-healing capacity.

With which complaints can osteopathy help?

Osteopathy for adults can provide support for a wide range of complaints and symptoms. Osteopathic treatment focuses not only on pain reduction, but also on improving mobility and recovery. For a more extensive list, we refer you to the indications page.

Common complaints include:

  • headaches and migraines
  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • back and neck complaints
  • shoulder complaints
  • pelvic complaints
  • abdominal and intestinal complaints
  • respiratory complaints
  • stress-related complaints
  • muscle and joint pain
  • tension in connective tissue

The best treatment is always dependent on the personal situation, the cause of the complaints, and overall health.

The approach of an osteopath

At Andromeda Center for Osteopathy, extensive time is taken for examination and treatment. The process always begins with an intake in which the osteopath asks questions about:

  • the complaints and symptoms
  • medical history
  • lifestyle and physical strain
  • previous injuries or surgeries
  • daily activities
  • This is followed by a physical examination in which the body is examined as a whole for loss of mobility and tension.

Mobility examination

An osteopath examines, among other things:

  • joints
  • muscles
  • blood vessels, lymphatic system
  • organs
  • breathing
  • the nervous system

By examining these different systems in connection with one another, more insight is gained into the possible cause of the complaints.

What happens during an osteopathic treatment?

During a treatment, the osteopath uses gentle and targeted techniques to improve the mobility of tissues. The treatment is tailored to the body and the physical tolerance of the patient.

The goal of osteopathy is to help the body function better again, so that recovery processes are supported. Many people experience more relaxation, greater freedom of movement, and less tension in the body after a treatment.

Sometimes the body may react temporarily after a treatment with, for example, an increase in symptoms, fatigue, or a headache. This is usually short-lived and is part of the recovery process.

Osteopathy and health

Within osteopathy, health is seen as the body’s ability to adapt and remain in balance. When mobility decreases or structures are under long-term tension, the affected tissue does not function optimally.

By improving the mobility of joints, organs, and connective tissue, osteopathy can contribute to:

  • more balance in the body
  • reduction of tension
  • support for recovery
  • improvement of mobility
  • more comfort in daily life

Osteopathy focuses not only on the complaint itself, but on the functioning of the body as a whole.
