However, it may also be appropriate to discuss those who do not recover. Because that, too, is a reality.

Many people who visit us have been dealing with symptoms for a long time and have often tried various treatments. During an initial consultation, I therefore primarily aim to understand the origin of the symptoms and why the body is apparently unable to recover. By offering a different perspective and explanation, you provide people with renewed hope. This also creates expectations.

At the same time, I have learned that while a treatment can stimulate the body toward recovery, recovery cannot ultimately be forced. Usually, a patient responds well to treatment and change occurs. But sometimes, almost nothing happens, despite the same attention, effort, and intention. Often, you then notice that something else is at play. Emotional stress, for example, such as grief, anxiety, or a sense of injustice. Or the tension and uncertainty surrounding medical tests for which the results are still pending.

That is precisely why I believe it is important to remain honest with patients, as well as with myself as a practitioner. When a patient experiences no reaction or change after several treatments, we must also be honest enough to admit that recovery is sometimes not yet possible or that the individual may require different assistance at that time.

In her book 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘖𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘺, Rachel E.
