A 53-year-old patient consulted me regarding complaints in his right arm that had persisted for five months; a tired, aching, and sometimes tingling sensation extending from the shoulder to the fingers. He inquired whether I could be of assistance. <\/p>\n
As osteopaths, we are accustomed to hearing that complaints have arisen “out of nowhere.” In reality, this is rarely the case; the body is brilliant, and its self-healing capacity usually ensures that through compensations and adjustments, the body remains free of symptoms. It is only when this system no longer functions, or when additional issues in an area require further adaptation, that complaints may arise. This was also the case with this patient. Examination revealed normal mobility of the neck, and there were no complaints in \uadf8hat area. The cause was found to be a compression of the neurovascular bundle at the level of the right collarbone. The underlying cause? A fall on his chest two years ago, which resulted in bruised ribs at the time, but from which he had recovered after five weeks without residual symptoms. For that reason, he had not mentioned it during the initial consultation. However, the mobility of the right side of the diaphragm was still not equal to that of the left side. Via the nervous system, this caused tension in a small muscle near the collarbone, which reduced the space for the passing neurovascular bundle. Why did the complaints manifest now, two years later? The final straw was a day spent helping a neighbor with ceiling work. He now recalled that the complaints began in the following days. Treatment of the diaphragm and adjacent structures, together with the region of the right collarbone and the first rib, caused his symptoms to disappear. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
